Skiing Morzine and The Portes du Soleil

Situated in the Portes du Soleil ski region, Morzine boasts an impressive ski portfolio with over 280 slopes and 625km of pistes to choose from. As if that isn't enough, there also nine snow parks and eleven other ski villages to visit as well. The latter makes it extremely popular with snowboarders too.

What makes it a particularly popular destination from a skiing perspective is that it is also a positively fabulous place for beginners and intermediates with 37 green runs, 112 blue, and 105 red. Mixed groups and family ski holidays are simply ideal here as a consequence as much of the terrain is wide, relatively friendly, well pisted runs. Whilst not an out and out experts destination, there is still quite a lot to do, with 26 blacks and the world famous Avoriaz Wall and some great off-piste down into Chatel.

Morzine Town

Morzine is a very pretty ski resort that is situated in a valley with chalets either side. It has an intimate, but for its size, vibrant feel with the chalets traditionally styled in wood, stone and slate tiles. As a consequence it provide a fabulous winter landscape with most chalets located relatively convenient to the slopes.

Being so close to Geneva, just one hour, it attracts a large influx of weekend skiers and the streets, bars and restaurants can fill quickly, particularly in the popular periods (Christmas, New Year and February) generating a warm and fun ambience. It isn't St Anton, Verbier or Val d'Isere, but for all but the hardened party goers it has plenty to entertain.
The town has an excellent indoor swimming pool and a few shops for non-skiers and shopaholics.

Mountain Restaurants

Generally the mountain restaurants in and around Morzine and its neighbour Les Gets are well priced and cater for skiers looking to spend maximum time on the snow rather than in the restaurant. However, one or two do French lunchtime dining experience very well and La Paika deserves a very special mention. Found off the Blue pistes Vorosses, on sunny days the terrace is filled to capacity, the fabulous prawns, bream, escalopes of fabulous steaks sizzling on the hot coals. Colder days the fire is roaring, the traditional wood interior a real home from home retreat. Two important tips, booking is a must, sometimes seven days in advance, and save some  room for the fabulous home cooked desserts!

Other Activities

Sledging is a popular past time and the towns swimming pool is a great place to relax or enjoy a few lengths of the pool. Snowshoeing is popular and a great way to see the mountain's hidden nature. And if you time it right, why not pop down to the ice rink to catch the Pingouins de Morzine-Avoriaz who are one of France's top ice hockey sides who play in the French Premier League.
